A Nigerian Playwright Tackles Abuse Head On in "My Room, My Doom"

Yemi Akande, is a playwright, theatre director, and artistic director of YemiArts Creation. Ms. Akande wrote and directed ‘My Room, My Doom’ which was selected for the 2020 Lagos Theatre Festival. This production explores the world of domestic violence and its consequences on society. I have the privilege of interviewing Ms. Akande and learning about her motivations and goals for her project—and how through a live theatrical performance she is challenging her audience to take a stand.

The Rape Hurts Foundation has now expanded to support children who are at risk of abuse, including boys who are increasingly the targets for sexual abuse. Ms. Tanyinga is not simply supporting girls and women who have been raped or trafficked. She is changing the culture by changing how girls, boys, and women perceive themselves and giving them the means to control their destiny.

It is well documented that black women are experiencing a high level of intimate partner violence and are less likely to report. There are historical reasons for the latter. ranging from historically unequal treatment in the criminal justice system to a systemic cultural attitude that black women need to “protect” our men and not give ammunition to the broader society.

The Campus Sexual Assault Crisis

We’re in the middle of summer and now is the perfect time to start to think about how to help our children get through the school year safely.  We should spend some time thinking about the issue of sexual violence that is occurring in our schools. The trail of professional/personal/psychological devastation and costs to society are high.
